Tips To Help Seniors Remain Independent As They Age

Seniors often report feeling that they have completely relinquished their independence and now have to rely on others to get through their day-to-day life. As you care for your senior loved one, it may be hard to find a balance between keeping them safe and preserving their wellbeing, while also allowing them to uphold their independence. These two items may feel as they are in constant conflict, but they can actually work in tandem – keeping both your loved one safe and self-sufficient.

Home Modifications
The choice to age in place (stay in their home) is becoming increasingly more common for modern day seniors. Their reasoning may be because they are comfortable there or their home is sentimental to them. Regardless of reasoning, as seniors age their needs may change – including what they need their home to provide them. A house can be full of hazards to seniors, but simple changes can keep them free from harm. Make updates like improving lighting, install automatic lights on the exterior, add handrails to staircases and bathrooms, set up a security system (which can also be utilized in emergency situations), and remove any unnecessary obstacles or furniture that could make moving about difficult.

Medical Needs

Perhaps the most common reason why a senior would need additional resources and help is because of medical care. It is not easy for them to monitor their healthcare alone. Help them get organized with detailed instructions that are simple and easy to follow, use pill containers, and even set alarms to remind them to check their blood sugar, attend a doctors appointment, or take medication.

Emotional Support
Keeping our senior family members and friends physically protected is often a priority, but their emotional needs are equally as important. There are many ways to do this. Help them get involved in a community volunteer organization; giving back will help them feel good! Encourage them to share their wisdom with you by asking for help or advice in your own life. Teach them how to use video calling and social media to help them stay connected with distant friends and relatives, and ensure you are visiting regularly.

Consider an in-home caregiver
In-home care is the perfect solution that blends your desire to keep your loved one safe while still respecting their wishes to be independent. An in-home care provider can offer anything from companionship, to personal home care services, to advanced services depending on level of need. Companionship will keep them engaged in social activities and support them emotionally. Personal home care services can ensure their home stays safe, they are receiving their medication, and even help with grooming, meals, and laundry. Advanced care helps those with more severe conditions such as Alzheimer’s and Dementia, post-surgical care, or palliative care.
